I was born on February 2, 1980. I was lucky to grow up around horses, although some people say I never really grew up! When I was ten, my mom leased an Arabian Gelding named Risky. Mom, my brother, and I took lessons on him, and it was my first taste of the gentle power of horses. I was hooked, and I never looked back. A few years later, I went to a riding camp with my grade seven class. By this time Risky had moved away from my hometown of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and I had been horseless for some time. I was happy to be on the back of a horse, a paint mare named Patches, once again. I could feel in my blood that, one way or another, horses would be a part of my life. When I returned from the trip, I proudly announced that I wanted to take lessons again. Eventually, I leased a horse named Aladdin, who like Risky was an Arabian Gelding. He was a beautiful chestnut with a white blaze, and during my many lessons on him I began to learn the basics of riding, and the simple pleasures of being around horses and just hanging around at the barn. We spent countless hours in both the riding arena and on the beautiful trails of the North Vancouver Mountains. Around that time, for a school project, I made a brochure about horse care and glued it onto red construction paper. It was the beginning of what would become The Little Red Riding Book. |
