Jonathan Boudin
Jonathan Boudin has been riding since he was ten, and writing since high school. These two passions merged in The Little Red Riding Book.
Horses are in Jonathan's blood and have been for most of his life. He has trained and competed in dressage, driven draft horses, and competed on the Eastern Oregon University Polo Team. He has also ridden western and loves a good trail ride. In addition to The Little Red Riding Book, Jonathan has written for magazines and was a writer and editor on the Eastern Oregon University newspaper, The Voice. He also helped found the Kiara Care Society, an organization that allows those who have been touched by cancer to spend time with horses.
As a young teenager, Jonathan leased a horse and took lessons. When his instructor suggested it was time for him to get his own horse, he could not have agreed more! All he had to do was convince his parents. They agreed that if Jonathan helped pay board he could have his horse. He quickly got a job cleaning stalls on the weekend and soon had his first horse, Amaretta. A few years later Jonathan started to ride Percy, who eventually became his horse. The two horses became the main equine characters in The Little Red Riding Book.
Several years earlier, the beginnings of The Little Red Riding Book were taking place - when Jonathan was in the eighth grade. He made a pamphlet about horses, explainging how to groom, tack, and care for them. He glued it onto red construction paper and called it "The Little Red Riding Book". In college he started to take writing more seriously, and at the urging of his mother, decided to turn his little pamphlet into an educational children's horse story.
While Jonathan wrote the book, he also searched for an illustrator who would compliment the story. He found Marti Adrian, whose illustrations bring the book to life. The result is a charming and attractive book that is enjoyed by both those who ride and those who dream of riding, and by both children and adults.
Jonathan's desire to spread the joy of horses is evident in The Little Red Riding Book. "It's all about bringing the joy of horses to kids, and adults for that matter, and to keep kids reading," he says.
He lives near Vancouver, British Columbia and continues to ride and write.
